The congressional, seat soon to be vacated by Kendrick Meek, has a dozen people vying for it. The pool of hopeful’s varies from city councilmen and former politicians to activists and affluent business owners. With this race predicted to be a tight one, Florida New Majority rolled up its sleeves and started sifting through the candidates with a firm commitment to endorse the candidate that will best serve the constituents in Congressional District 17.

“Our congressional Districts are very important. One of the things we are looking for is how close the candidate is to the community and how they relate to the people,” said Badili Jones, of Florida New Majority. “We are tired of professional politicians and millionaire candidates who lose touch with the community; we need a congressperson who has roots, who will represent us in Washington.

After conducting an extensive candidate screening, which culminated with a candidate-screening forum, Florida New Majority is putting its weight behind community leader Marleine Bastien.  “After interviewing all of the candidates our endorsement committee made up of members of FNM decided that Marleine is the most viable candidate and most in line with the needs of the community,” said Gihan Perera, Director of FNM. “Marleine Bastien is a fresh face on the political scene, but she brings with her a wealth of experiences, she will be able to blaze a new way of doing politics. That is what we need, we’ve had enough politics as usual.”

This endorsement comes on the heels of Florida New Majority’s astounding success during the 2010 census.  Having knocked on 103,000 doors and made direct contact with 30,000 people, Florida New Majority has proved that it can mobilize and make an impact. “Florida New Majority is ready to show what grassroots power can do in elections,” said Perera.

Ms. Bastien has worked in the community for the past 29 years and has directed her energy toward issues in the district regarding affordable housing, immigration services, access to healthcare, job creation and education.

It looks like Marleine Bastein is the candidate Florida New Majority has been looking for. “We are building a movement where we both take on the issues that are important to the community and also mobilize the electoral power in our communities towards what we want. We will get Marleine Bastein into office, and the voters will have a true voice of the people in Washington, ” said Perera.

Moise in the Mail

Did you get this in the mail? Some people said they are angry about it. But I am angry about politics as usual. No wonder so many people are apathetic and not interested in voting. The "leaders" we have to choose from present themselves as glamorous, but when you pull back the curtain is the same old boys club.

Rudy Moise is a millionaire who's lent his campaign $1million! And the people who have given him money are the health care indusrty and developers - the exact industries that have been fighting a progressive agenda.

Rudy lives in a $2.3 million mansion in Davie, according to a recent Miami New Times Article (it is legal to live outside of the District in Federal races) while the district he wants to represent struggles with poverty every day. His now defunct company got a $500,000 loan from tax-payers through the Miami-Dade Empowerment Trust. The Trust was set up to finance affordable housing, provide job training, and improve social services. Moise's project, Radio Carnivale, did none of these things. Moise even told the Miami Herald, "I wouldn't have guaranteed the loan."

The loan was never paid back!

Rudy says, "I was the single biggest loser in this deal." What about the tax payers, Rudy? What about your constituents who needed housing and jobs? I think they were the biggest loser in the deal.

If you are angry about this mail piece - you should be. Call Rudy Moise and tell him to give back the money he owes taxpayers , 305-751-2104.

Let's stand up to those who think they can buy our democracy.

Eye On Miami, the magic city's very own anonymous-critical-news-and-politics blog is supporting Marleine Bastien. From today's post:

"I would vote for Haitian American activist Marlene Bastein. On behalf of the Haitian community in District 17, Bastein is solid gold and not the kind that is exchanged for political influence. Too bad the Herald didn't take note"

It looks like Miami is finally waking up to who the true progressive in the race is. Now we just need people to walk the talk and come out to the volunteer FNM for Marleine precinct walk this Saturday , August 7, from 10am - 2pm.
